The Effect of College Students' Reassurance Seeking on their Social Anxiety and Depression : Mediating Effects of Rumination

Abstract

|
The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of college students¡¯ reassurance seeking and rumination on social anxiety and depression, and the mediating effect of rumination on the relationship between reassurance seeking and social anxiety, reassurance seeking and depression. This study targeted 481 college students attending in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon and other area. For data analysis, mean, standard deviation, frequency analysis, Pearson¡¯s correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis and hierarchical analysis were conducted using SPSS Win 21. The main findings of the study are as follows: First, self-reproach, general threat, depressive rumination were significant predictors of college students¡¯ social anxiety. On the other hand, depressive rumination, self-reproach were the significant predictor of college students¡¯ depression. Second, rumination had a partial mediating effect on the reassurance seeking and social anxiety. On the other hand, rumination had a full mediating effect on the relationship between reassurance seeking and depression. Finally, the clinical implications and several limitations of the present study were discussed.
